Anatomy & Function
• The vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve, extending from the brainstem through the neck and chest into the abdomen. It is the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system – the ‘rest, digest, and heal’ pathway.
Functions include: regulating heart rate and blood pressure, digestion, lung rhythm, and swallowing reflexes, and communication between gut and brain
Physical Dysfunctions
• Anxiety, panic attacks, poor stress resilience.
• Digestive issues: IBS, gastroparesis, indigestion.
• Heart rhythm irregularities.
• Weakened immunity, chronic inflammation.
• Voice problems or swallowing difficulties.
Energetic / Metaphysical Perspective
• The vagus nerve symbolizes surrender, calming the body and mind to return to peace.
• Imbalances may reflect fear of letting go, blocked expression of truth, or not feeling safe in the body.
• Affirmation: ‘I trust life’s flow; I am safe in surrender.
Supportive Practices
• Physical: Humming, chanting ‘OM,’ gargling, cold water splash, diaphragmatic breathing, gentle neck stretches.
- Osteopath or Practitioner for cranial sacral therapy.
- Deep tissue Massage around the neck, shoulder, and top of the spine.
- Working with the Cervical Plexus – an important energy center, whereby blockages here can impact the brain, ears, eyes, mouth, jaw, Shoulders, breast, chest, and heart.
• Herbal/Nutritional: Nervines such as lemon balm, chamomile, passionflower; omega-3 fatty acids for nerve support.
• Energetic: Visualization of silver-blue light from brainstem to gut, affirmations like ‘I release into peace; my body restores itself in calm.’
• Chakra link: Throat ↔ Heart ↔ Solar Plexus ↔ Sacral (bridging upper and lower centers).
